Some Useful Tips


Healthy way to make tea

Heat milk or mixture of water and milk in a vessel or pan. Add required amount of sugar, mix and bring to boil.

Turn off the flame and add the required quantity of tea leaves. Mix, cover and let it stand for a couple of minutes. Remove cover, mix again, filter and serve.

It is advisable to use high quality pure Tea Leaves rather than dust or powder. It is advisable to make tea using at least very little milk and not black tea.

Boiling tea leaves gives thermal shock to the leaves and because of this they release toxins into the water. So tea leaves are to be added only when the water comes down to a little below boiling point.

A snack to go with tea
Boil ghee (2 spoons), turn off flame, add powdered sugar (2 spoons) and mix well. This paste can be applied to khakhra and folded into half like a sandwich. It is a tasty snack for children and adults alike and can be enjoyed along with milk, tea or any beverage.


Healthy way to make Desi Ghee at Home

Buy good quality unsalted cooking butter. Place the slab of butter in a large vessel and keep it on a very slow flame. The butter will melt, boil and slowly turn dark in colour. When all noise of boiling stops, turn off the flame and let the ghee cool completely. Filter this ghee using a thin muslin cloth and store in a dry container.

Other uses for Whey Water

Whey water derived from making cottage cheese might also be used for washing hair as it is an effective moisturizing and cleansing agent. It should be used warm by people who are prone to catch cold easily and at room temperature by other people in summer. At room temperature, it has a cooling effect on the body when used to wash hair.

Selection of Cooking Utensils and Equipment

It is preferable to use iron, stainless steel or glass utensils for cooking rather than non-stick or aluminium vessels. After cooking in iron utensils, you have to transfer the food immediately to another container (steel, glass, etc.); otherwise the food will turn black and undergo an adverse chemical reaction.

If you are not going to use an iron utensil daily or alternate day, then it is advisable to smear it with cooking oil and store it and to clean it before next use. Rust (orange colour layer) forms very quickly on iron. If you are using it every day then there is no need to do this.

Some cooking tips

  • Coconut is good for a youthful looking glowing skin when eaten as coconut chutney. However, it is advisable to avoid cooking it. If it has to be added to a dish, then do so after turning off the flame. Do not heat any dish after adding grated coconut to it. (Discard the coconut water and use only the solid part of the coconut.)
  • Avoid adding lot of chillies to food since a high chilly diet reduces tolerance and increases irritability and aggression. Try to add moderate or less salt in food while cooking.
  • Do not reuse or reheat oil and ghee (used for deep frying) after it has been heated once and cooled.
